Sgt. Villacorta with HCSO’s Vehicular Crimes Division said the driver was able to get out of the car and pull his passenger as well. The driver then walked about a mile to call 911 and get help, but the unidentified passenger succumbed to their injuries.

CURRENT LOOK AT TRAFFIC CONDITIONS

The driver did not appear intoxicated and passed field sobriety tests, so it’s unclear if road conditions or speed played a factor, but deputies are looking into it as their investigation continues.

Investigators closed off part of the highway during the investigation, but Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said the westbound lanes have reopened and the rest of the road should reopen sometime after 5 a.m.
