Assalley's 36-yard FG gives Iowa State 23-21 win over Texas

Quarterback Sam Ehlinger #11 of the Texas Longhorns is tackled by linebacker O'Rien Vance #34, and defensive back Lawrence White #11 of the Iowa State Cyclones. Assalley kicked a 36-yarder as time expired and Iowa State knocked off 22nd-ranked Texas 23-21 on Saturday to snap a two-game losing streak. "They continue to fight when I think everyone has written us off at times," Iowa State coach Matt Campbell said. Jones cruised in for the score to make it 17-7 Iowa State just one play into the third quarter. Iowa State hosts Kansas next Saturday.

6 things to know ahead of Saturday's Iowa State v UT matchup

It will be chilly, but with their season on the line, expect the Texas Longhorns to leave it all out on the field in this weekend's matchup against Iowa State. Iowa State put up 41 points on the road last week in Norman. After driving down the field and scoring a touchdown to make it 42-41, Iowa State opted to go for two and the attempt didn't succeed. This was part in thanks to a controversial no-call on a potential pass interference that might have turned a conversion for Iowa State into a game-sealing interception for the Sooners. The stadium will be loud, and Iowa State will certainly be looking for some reprisal this weekend when the Horns come to town.

Why is the Longhorns defense struggling so much?

All of these are reasons that this Texas Longhorns defense has struggled mightily throughout the 2019 season, but what is the excuse for being the 119th ranked team in the nation in total defense? The performance of the defense this year has been a huge disappointment, especially considering how well Sam Ehlinger and the offense have played. Historically SpeakingTexas had their worst defensive season in terms of total yardage back in 2015 when they allowed 452.6 yards per game. If the season ended today, their current 469.9 yards allowed per game would be the worst in school history. Will this weak Texas defense overshadow this powerful Texas offense and ruin the Horns hopes of having a successful year?

6 things to know about the Longhorns huge matchup with Oklahoma

While these two teams are certainly the favorites to square off again in the conference championship at the end of the season, the Texas Longhorns know better than anyone that there are no guarantees in football. Take a look at this touchdown from last year's Big 12 Championship:3. Last week's Big 12 Newcomer of the Week, Roschon Johnson, who rushed for 121 yards in a conference road win against West Virginia. However, if this Texas defense can put pressure on Hurts, they can prevent Oklahoma fromputting up 40+ points. He has been the heart and soul of this Texas team.

Best and worst of UT's win over West Virginia

Best Defensive PlayArguably, this could be the defensive play of the year. He tried to make a big highlight hit, ended up missing the tackle, and this turned into a 44-yard play and eventually points for West Virginia. The lack of discipline and inability to wrap up on this play helped put West Virginia right back in this game. Texas was flagged 10 times for 89 yards, 7 more total penalties than West Virginia. He was not perfect, but certainly good enough to help Texas get past West Virginia.

Who leads the pack in the season's first Big 12 Power Rankings?

A handful of Big 12 teams were faced with some serious early challenges on their schedule, all which were in preparation to fight for the Big 12 crown over the next nine games. That is to be determined, but let's take a look how those two teams and the rest of the conference stack up in this year's first Big 12 Power Rankings. Oklahoma State (3-0)Offensively, Oklahoma State could be the best team in the conference. Kansas (2-1)Next Game: vs. West Virginia (2-1)OverallThe Big 12, as always, is expected to be a competitive conference at the top. With the first few non-conference games out of the way for most teams, Big 12 play is set to begin weekend.
