STUDY: Texans play it safe—except when it comes to expired food

HOUSTON – Everything may be bigger in Texas, but apparently, risk-taking isn’t one of them.

A recent survey by Deadspin.com ranked Texans 35th nationwide on the risk index, meaning the Lone Star State leans toward playing it safe. The study, which surveyed 2,500 people across the U.S., examined everyday gambles Americans take—from eating expired food to running red lights and delaying doctor visits.

While Texans might not be the biggest thrill-seekers, they do have one notable weak spot: questionable expiration dates.

According to the survey, 66% of Texans admit to occasionally eating expired food, with 13% doing so at least once a month. Whether it’s a past-due carton of milk or a week-old leftover brisket, many Texans seem willing to roll the dice when it comes to their stomachs.

The state’s overall low risk-taking ranking suggests that Texans may prefer their adventures on the rodeo circuit rather than in their daily routines. Compared to states that topped the risk index—where reckless driving and overdue doctor visits were more common—Texas residents seem to embrace a more measured approach to risk.

Still, while most Texans might not be skydiving or bungee-jumping on the fly, they’re proving that sometimes, the biggest gamble is what’s lurking in the back of the fridge.
