White Oak, Buffalo Bayou to become new home of new art mural dedicated to migratory birds
"Confluence" is currently being developed near UH-DowntownHOUSTON โ A new mural is being installed at two of Houstonโs bayous near the University of Houston-Downtown dedicated to the migratory birds of Houstonโs major waterways. The mural, titled โConfluence,โ is being developed by Jane Kim, co-founder of Ink Dwell studio and commissioned by Houston Parks Board and in collaboration with Buffalo Bayou Partnership. It tells a story about birds and how they seasonally change color to attract mates, explained a news release. Measured at about 223 feet in length, the muralโs background will serve as a map of Houstonโs bayous. AdThe mural began development this month and is set to complete between four to six weeks, the release said.
National mariachi finalist named; This UH-Downtown senior to represent Houston in vocal contest
HOUSTON โ A University of Houston-Downtown student has earned a spot in the finals for a mariachi vocal contest. Senior Jimmy Arredondo, who is one of the vocalists on UHDโs mariachi group โLos Caimanesโ (Spanish for โThe Gatorsโ), will be the only Houstonian to compete in the 26th Annual Mariachi Vargas National Vocal Competition, the largest and long-running mariachi festival in the nation, taking place this Saturday virtually. Arredondo submitted a production from his idol and four-time Latin Grammy winner and mariachi singer Pedro Fernandez โEl Aventureroโ (The Adventurer). โHis work ethnic, sheer determination and resilience has got him this far,โ Vasquez told KPRC 2. The 26th Annual Mariachi Vargas National Vocal Contest will stream on YouTube this Saturday at 7 p.m.
