If you are among the approximately 18,000 people on the Houston Housing Authority’s Housing Choice Vouchers waitlist, you must re-register online to avoid being dropped from the list.

The Houston Housing Authority (HHA) is not issuing new vouchers at this time. Instead, they are updating the waitlist to confirm how many individuals still require assistance with monthly rent payments.

Investigative reporter Amy Davis has reported on significant changes at the Housing Authority. These vouchers assist families by covering a portion of their rent that they cannot afford.

In November, Davis introduced viewers to a 62-year-old cancer patient who has been on the housing voucher waitlist since 2016. Many others are in similar situations, waiting for assistance.

Changes to Houston housing waitlist

Speaking with Amy earlier this year, the new Housing Authority CEO Jamie Bryant emphasized the importance of having current contact details.

“If we don’t have your current information—your email, phone number, or if you’ve moved—then we have no way of knowing how to contact you,” Bryant said. “Sometimes folks put themselves on a waitlist eight years ago and now they have moved out of Houston, they’ve gotten a job, and they no longer need the assistance, or they’ve already found housing.”
