HOUSTON – Summer bodies are made year-round, and getting fit on a budget has never been easier here in the Houston area.
It’s called “Hills for Breakfast,” and as the name suggests, it’s a hill workout at Eleanor Tinsley Park every weekend (weather permitting) that has become a sort of community movement. Houston trainer and fitness coach James Jefferson started “Hills for Breakfast” about a year ago.

Jefferson says the community has really responded to the event. About 100-plus people from several different states come out every Saturday, and it continues to grow.
“The hill is a great workout because it’s on a steep incline and it gives people better opportunities to burn fat versus just going to a gym, and it’s also open for the public to come to a park,” he explained.
They do about five different hill exercises, from lunges, side lunges, to back pedals, and then sprints at the end. For moms, dads, and anyone on the go, who may be on a budget or want another way to work out, this is a great inspiration.
“Gym memberships can range from $50 to $100,” he said. “Out here, you have $5 to $30 for a ticket, you come out every Saturday and get a great workout.”
Jefferson also says you should incorporate a hill workout at least once a week. But be careful if you are a beginner.
“Just make sure you have good instruction and you know what you’re doing with exercises, don’t just try to go up there and wing it,” he explained. “It’s easy to get hurt on a steep incline; you could fall, but make sure you have good instruction and go at it.”

“Every little thing that you do matters when it comes to working out,” Jefferson added. “We all know that fitness and eating right helps you live longer and have a healthier life as you age.”
Jefferson charges $5 a ticket, which goes toward his non-profit and pays for the park permit, water, and drinks for everyone.
There are $30 tickets available and they come with t-shirts and other perks. All ages are welcome. Again, the event is weather permitting, so please contact Jefferson if you are interested before the workout. Visit his website for more information or follow them on Instagram at @hills4breakfasttx.
