CONROE, Texas – KPRC 2 has learned that the suspected drunk driver in a crash that killed a 3-year-old on Sunday night had been arrested for driving while under the influence at least twice before.

Conroe Police Department said they arrested Donald Carson, 55, who showed signs of impairment after crashing into another car on I-45 going Northbound. Investigators said there were three people in the other car, including a 26-year-old mother and her two daughters, 5 and 3 years old. The 3-year-old died on the scene.
Carson is currently facing charges of intoxication manslaughter and intoxication assault in Montgomery County.

According to records from the Texas Department of Public Safety, Carson was previously arrested in 2003 by the Beaumont Police Department for driving while under the influence. Records also show he was convicted on the charge and sentenced to 180 days in the Texas Department of Corrections.
However, he was Carson had also been previously arrested for DWI in California in 1993, according to Siskiyou County court records. He entered a guilty plea on the charge.
In a statement, Conroe Police Chief Jon Buckholtz called Sunday’s crash in part “completely preventable.”
“We grieve with the family as a mother and child fight for their lives with serious injuries in an intensive care unit, while their precious three-year-old has been taken from them forever. Due to the decisions and actions of yet another intoxicated driver, we will never know the impact that this child may have had on the world: a life full of promise and potential.”
