HOUSTON – A female deputy constable with Harris County Pct. 1 was shot during a shootout with an armed man near the Harris County Family Law Center in Downtown Houston.

The injured deputy constable has been identified as Sheila Jones.

Jones was working as security at the Family Law Center when the armed suspect was seen walking toward the building.

Officials said four Pct. 1 deputies, including Jones, chased him across San Jacinto and down Congress.

Once deputies made contact with the suspect, a shootout ensued after he fired at them.

Jones was struck in the lower side by a bullet during the shootout and responding officers shot the suspect.

Jones was taken to Memorial Hermann Medical Center by helicopter.

An Army veteran, Jones has worked in law enforcement for over 30 years. Before coming to work for the Pct. 1 Constable’s Office, she worked for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office as a major.

Her son also works for the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Officials say Jones has worked with Pct. 1 for two years.
