71 animals rescued from urine, feces infested school bus, van parked at Galveston Island State Park

HOUSTON – Nearly 100 animals were rescued from an old school bus and a small van parked on a property at the state park in Galveston, according to the Houston SPCA.

Earlier Monday, the Houston SPCA was requested by the City of Galveston to help with the rescue of 71 dogs, cats, and puppies that were being kept in deplorable conditions at the Galveston Island State Park off FM 3005.

Officials said the bus was filled with urine and feces. Most of the animals were emaciated and their fur soaked in their own urine.

The animals were also being kept in small wire kennels with no food or water present.

At least 6 puppies, 13 dogs and three cats were sent to Houston SPCA for veterinary exams, while the remaining dogs will be taken to Galveston Island Humane Society by Houston SPCA and City of Galveston Animal Services.

Houston SPCA Chief Veterinarian Dr. Roberta Westbrook will lead the team of Texas A&M veterinary students to conduct cruelty exams for the dogs at Galveston Island Humane Society.

The dogs were surrendered by their owner at the state park.
