SWEENY, Texas – A bomb threat at Sweeny High School Friday morning prompted emergency evacuation and shut down for the remainder of Friday.
Students were “relocated to a safe location,” according to the district.
KPRC 2’s Bryce Newberry confirmed with the Sweeny Police Department there was a bomb threat, first alerted by dispatchers with the Brazoria County Sheriff’s Office around 8:45 a.m.
Investigators said a student left a note on a desk or wall, warning about pipe bombs that would go off at 10:30 a.m. —”find them before tomorrow.” A teacher reported it to campus police.
Around 1:30 p.m., Sweeny Mayor Dusty Hopkins said “all is clear” at the high school.
Sky 2 was above the school, where Texas DPS officers were parked outside during the investigation.
Since the campus will be closed for the remainder of Friday, all students will need to be picked up at the reunification site, located at New Shores Church, 6303 FM Road 1459. Parents and guardians will need to bring identification as well as being identified as emergency contact.
Officials said all vehicles left at campus will be retrieved only after the scene is secured.
Multiple surrounding agencies, such as firefighters with Wild Peach Fire Department joined to help secure the area, including Pearland police who sent its bomb detection K9 unit to the area.
