HOUSTON – A driver died Wednesday morning after investigators said a train hit their car in southeast Houston.

It happened shortly after 6:45 a.m. when a deputy patrolling the area called other officers to the scene on Galveston Road near Dixie Farm Road.

Based on preliminary details from Harris County Precinct 8 Constable deputies, who are leading the investigation, an unidentified driver, 26, tried to beat the train while turning into a lumber yard but was hit by the Union Pacific train.
The driver was the only person in the car and he was the only vehicle involved in the crash. Investigators say he was rushed to an area hospital, where he died from his injuries.

The northbound lanes of Galveston Road were closed off from traffic while authorities investigated and cleaned up the wreckage. The roadways were reopened around 9 a.m.
