It all started when the Houston Police Department said a U.S. Marshal from the Gulf Coast Violent Task Force shot a man at the McDonald’s on Bay Area Boulevard near Galveston Road at around 9:40 a.m.

During a news conference, U.S. Marshal Chief T. Michael O’Connor said the man, later identified as Robert Johnson, had an outstanding warrant from Plano, Texas for aggravated sexual assault of a child dating back to September 2024.

U.S. Marshals from East Texas and the Southern District collaborated once they learned about Johnson, who cut off his ankle monitor and was reportedly hiding out in Houston.

Their investigation then brought them to the McDonald’s on Bay Area Boulevard, where Johnson reportedly frequented, to take him down.

Johnson got up when he was confronted by officers inside the restaurant. However, officials said he ignored their commands and stood his ground, so they used a taser, to no avail. From there, Johnson, according to O’Connor, grabbed a bag in a way that appeared threatening, and one of the officers outside the McDonalds shot him.

Despite all that, Johnson appeared to be unmoved and threatened officers, so a K9 was released. O’Connor said at last check, Johnson suffered non-life-threatening wounds and was rushed to a nearby hospital.

An internal investigation is now underway, per standard protocol, but O’Connor believes the U.S. Marshals handled the incident to the best of their abilities, given the circumstances.
