Galveston Island asked to reserve energy during winter storm; power now restored to impacted homes

GALVESTON, Texas – Snow came down on Galveston Island after a night of strong winds, sleet, and icy conditions.

While the city’s systems are running smoothly, CenterPoint Energy still experienced some power challenges, particularly west of 61st Street. Because of these issues, they asked everyone on the island to cut back on electricity use to help keep things steady, according to the city of Galveston.

Just before 11 a.m. Tuesday, there were reportedly about 170 homes and businesses are without power because of isolated outages, city officials said. Repair crews were out soon after to fix the issues.

To prepare for the possibility of more power disruptions, the City of Galveston opened McGuire Dent Recreation Center at 11 a.m. as a warming and charging station. The City of Jamaica Beach is also opening their City Hall for the same purpose.

Both locations are still available for anyone who needs them.

These centers are a precaution—officials want to be ready just in case, not because they expect widespread outages.

CenterPoint responded by releasing the following statement:

CenterPoint Energy has not made a request for conservation to the City of Galveston nor any of our customers in CenterPoint Energy’s Greater Houston area electric footprint. The system is operating as designed. We did experience a brief outage impacting approximately 3,000 customers on the west end of Galveston this morning. It was quickly addressed, and as of approximately 9:30 a.m. all customers in that area had been restored. We’ll continue to communicate with elected officials and local key stakeholders and keep them informed of CenterPoint’s timely response to Winter Storm Enzo and potential impacts to our infrastructure as the cold weather continues into this evening and tomorrow.
