CONROE, Texas – Following an incident where first-grade students at a Conroe ISD elementary school had their bathroom privileges revoked, leading to several having accidents in class, the district says the teacher involved is no longer employed with the district.
The incident occurred at Bartlett Elementary School when a first-grade teacher, Ashley Barerra, allegedly took away the restroom pass from her class around 3 p.m. on a school day, leaving the students unable to use the bathroom for hours.

The issue arose after lunch when the restroom pass went missing. Parents and a student who was in the classroom told KPRC 2 that as a result, the teacher punished the entire class by taking away their ability to use the restroom. For some students, this led to accidents as they were forced to wait for hours, unable to use the restroom.
Following the incident, Conroe ISD said a current staff member would serve as a substitute teacher for the remainder of the week as they completed an investigation.
On Friday, the district sent out a statement, confirming Barerra is no longer employed with the district.
“Bartlett Elementary and District administrators were made aware of a situation after school dismissed on Wednesday in which a first grade teacher at the school denied students access to the restroom as a punishment. We have conducted a comprehensive investigation, and the teacher is no longer employed by Conroe ISD. This incident is not a reflection of the thousands of exceptional educators teaching in classrooms across the District. We are committed to supporting the students and families impacted by this upsetting event and are dedicated to fostering a culture of mutual respect and care among all students, families, and staff.”
