Conroe ISD makes system adjustments following cyber attack
CONROE, Texas โ Conroe Independent School District officials had to make some changes to their network following a cyberattack meant to overwhelm the system. On Wednesday, the district officials put out a statement on the website that said people began experiencing issues last week that โimpacted phone and internet service throughout the day.โHardware engineers worked to identify the problem but later determined it was not a malfunction but rather an intentional attack from an outside source trying to overwhelm the districtโs network. According to the district, similar attacks have been happening across the country, but โno student or employee data was accessed.โThe district said it made adjustments to its system to โmitigate the impact to our phones and internet, and the matter is being investigated by law enforcement agencies.โIn early August, Humble ISD also experienced a similar attack and service was down for nearly 30 minutes until the district could get the system back up. An expert spoke to KPRC 2 and said โdenial of serviceโ (or DDoS) attacks are fairly common and are โnothing worth panicking over.โ

Student who attended strength and conditioning camp at The Woodlands High School 9th Grade Campus tests positive for COVID-19
A student who attended the strength and conditioning camp at The Woodlands High School Ninth Grade campus last week has tested positive for COVID-19. The district was notified of the positive test Thursday, June 18. Conroe ISD Director of Communications Sarah Blakelock said the facility used for the strength and training camp was thoroughly cleaned and โall students and employees directly impacted have been notified in accordance with UIL and Texas Education Agency guidelines about required self-quarantine or their ability to continue participating.โโAs a best practice, all families and students are advised to monitor their health, follow the CDC guidelines, and contact their healthcare provider with any questions or if symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath, or chills develop,โ Blakelock said. Blakelock said the positive test result at the site does not effect the strength and conditioning camps being held at two other locations. โAll sites are working to provide the safest experience for students by following UIL and Texas Education Agency guidelines,โ Blakelock said.

Conroe ISD graduate donates over $7K to pay off lunch debts
CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- It's the season for giving and a former Conroe ISD student did just that, by giving to his alma mater.On Tuesday, Conroe ISD announced that a graduate from Conroe High School donated funds totaling over $7,000 to pay off the lunch debts of Washington Jr. High and Conroe High School students.According to the district, the donor, who wished to remain anonymous, wanted to "extend a challenge to others to make a difference in the lives of students this holiday season. ""There is so much I owe to the teachers, coaches, students, and parents I grew up with in Conroe. It was and continues to be a close, supportive community, where you learn to take care of your neighbors," the donor told the district.Conroe ISD said the former student attended the district from elementary through high school and dawned the donation on his own experience.This is the second donation Conroe ISD has received. On Oct. 15, the Conroe ISD board of trustees reviewed the 2018-19 Texas Accountability and Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System, or TELPAS, results. These scores rate a districts performance based on student performance and progress, according to the TEA website. It takes five to sevensometimes up to eightyears for children to acquire this language, Upshaw said. The next CISD board of trustees meeting is Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at 3205 W. Davis St., Conroe.

As part of Governor Greg Abbotts 40 Point Plan for school safety, Zemlicka mentioned new construction requirements will be put in place to ensure safe school buildings. Hines said the districts newest school, Suchma Elementary School, is already outfitted with new classroom locks, and the older schools will be retrofitted with them as well. He said the Conroe High School Phase 2 renovation aims to bring the six-building campus under one roof to reduce the number of entries to the high school and keep students safe.

The Texas Education Agency released the 2018-19 accountability ratings for school districts across the state Aug. 15. Conroe ISD received a B for its work during the 2018-19 school year with its 62,577 students and 59 campuses. CISD earned 89 out of 100, the same as last year. The largest items on Proposition A are Conroe High Schools Master Plan, a new junior high in the Caney Creek feeder zone and general campus renovations. In order to reduce the bond amount, proposed projectssuch as the Teacher Training Center, Jett Center work and the Conroe High School ninth-grade campuswere all removed. Because the bond is a five-year bond, not the districts normal four-year bond, Null said a new elementary campus was added to address growth and pre-K with the additional year. Specifically, Williams said the Conroe High School ninth-grade campus is one of the greatest needs of the district.

At its July 16 meeting, the CISD board approved a report from Director of Communications Sarah Blakelock on a Senior Priority Pass Program. Although the trustees discussed the preliminary 2019-20 budget for the majority of the meeting, several other items were debated. Rice said the $20 million to the capital maintenance fund is meant to seed the fund and to purchase two future school sites.
