Memorial Hermann partners with Conroe ISD to vaccinate thousands in Montgomery County

SHENANDOAH, Texas โ€“ Memorial Hermann and Conroe ISD are working together to vaccinate nearly 7,000 people in Montgomery County. Their daughter, who lives with them, just had a baby, so Danny and Donna Driscoll wanted the vaccine in a hurry. Memorial Hermann teamed with Conroe ISD to administer about 7,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine at the Woodforest Bank Stadium Friday and Saturday. Thatโ€™s an honor for us to do that through this vaccine clinic,โ€ said Conroe ISD Superintendent Dr. Curtis Null. Dr. Null said they plan to do the second doses of the vaccine at the same site in three weeks.

Conroe ISD makes system adjustments following cyber attack

CONROE, Texas โ€“ Conroe Independent School District officials had to make some changes to their network following a cyberattack meant to overwhelm the system. On Wednesday, the district officials put out a statement on the website that said people began experiencing issues last week that โ€œimpacted phone and internet service throughout the day.โ€Hardware engineers worked to identify the problem but later determined it was not a malfunction but rather an intentional attack from an outside source trying to overwhelm the districtโ€™s network. According to the district, similar attacks have been happening across the country, but โ€œno student or employee data was accessed.โ€The district said it made adjustments to its system to โ€œmitigate the impact to our phones and internet, and the matter is being investigated by law enforcement agencies.โ€In early August, Humble ISD also experienced a similar attack and service was down for nearly 30 minutes until the district could get the system back up. An expert spoke to KPRC 2 and said โ€œdenial of serviceโ€ (or DDoS) attacks are fairly common and are โ€œnothing worth panicking over.โ€

Teachers from these Houston-area school districts made most complaints to union of COVID-19 protocol violations, discrepancies

HOUSTON โ€“ The Texas State Teachers Association announced Monday that its members had reported hundreds of COVID-19 protocol discrepancies or violations in the first couple weeks of the school year. New trend providing working parents alternative virtual learning setting for kids

With many local school districts opting for virtual learning amid COVID-19, a new trend is picking up speed in response to a need to help working parents find a safe place for their children. Learning academies like Kids R Kids of Lake Conroe are seeking to provide a socially-distanced classroom setting for students in the Houston area. Student who attended strength and conditioning camp at The Woodlands High School 9th Grade Campus tests positive for COVID-19

A student who attended the strength and conditioning camp at The Woodlands High School Ninth Grade campus last week has tested positive for COVID-19. The district was notified of the positive test Thursday, June 18. Conroe ISD Director of Communications Sarah Blakelock said the facility used for the strength and training camp was thoroughly cleaned and โ€œall students and employees directly impacted have been notified in accordance with UIL and Texas Education Agency guidelines about required self-quarantine or their ability to continue participating.โ€โ€œAs a best practice, all families and students are advised to monitor their health, follow the CDC guidelines, and contact their healthcare provider with any questions or if symptoms including fever, cough, shortness of breath, or chills develop,โ€ Blakelock said. Blakelock said the positive test result at the site does not effect the strength and conditioning camps being held at two other locations. โ€œAll sites are working to provide the safest experience for students by following UIL and Texas Education Agency guidelines,โ€ Blakelock said.

Conroe ISD graduate donates over $7K to pay off lunch debts

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- It's the season for giving and a former Conroe ISD student did just that, by giving to his alma mater.On Tuesday, Conroe ISD announced that a graduate from Conroe High School donated funds totaling over $7,000 to pay off the lunch debts of Washington Jr. High and Conroe High School students.According to the district, the donor, who wished to remain anonymous, wanted to "extend a challenge to others to make a difference in the lives of students this holiday season. ""There is so much I owe to the teachers, coaches, students, and parents I grew up with in Conroe. It was and continues to be a close, supportive community, where you learn to take care of your neighbors," the donor told the district.Conroe ISD said the former student attended the district from elementary through high school and dawned the donation on his own experience.This is the second donation Conroe ISD has received. Just last month, an anonymous donor paid it forward and donated over $1,400 before Thanksgiving for students at Oak Ridge Elementary school.

CONROE, Texas (KTRK) -- An anonymous donor moved by the spirit of giving paid off hundreds of dollars in lunch dues for Conroe students.Conroe ISD told Eyewitness News the person donated over $1,400 just before Thanksgiving for students at Oak Ridge Elementary School.The school principal says the donor has no connection to the school and just wanted to pay it forward after witnessing his father do a similar deed.We've seen multiple acts of kindness similar to the one at Oak Ridge. The Woodlands Township board of directors votes 5-2 to support Conroe ISD board after superintendent visit

The board had not seen a presentation for the November bond, and several members said they needed more information. Board members individually expressed support for the bond on a personal basis. After Nulls visit, the board voted on the resolution, voting 5-2 to support the $635.57 million CISD bond and, in a separate 5-2 vote, to support the second proposition for about $23 million for artificial turf. Before discussion of the resolution, about 10 people spoke in favor of the bond referendum during the public comment session. I would not expect the school board to take a position on whether we should put an underpass at Research Forest and Grogans Mill.

Conroe ISD receives TEA scores, contemplates ways to improve

Conroe ISD is examining how to improve the academic success at several campuses after receiving its 2018-19 Texas Education Agency scores. On Oct. 15, the Conroe ISD board of trustees reviewed the 2018-19 Texas Accountability and Texas English Language Proficiency Assessment System, or TELPAS, results. These scores rate a districts performance based on student performance and progress, according to the TEA website. It takes five to sevensometimes up to eightyears for children to acquire this language, Upshaw said. The next CISD board of trustees meeting is Nov. 19 at 6 p.m. at 3205 W. Davis St., Conroe.

Conroe ISD receives report on school safety

At a workshop Oct. 1, the Conroe ISD board of trustees compared notes on how CISD is prepared to protect its students from dangerous situations, such as school shooters, and on how the laws have changed surrounding school safety. Zemlicka said Region 6 governs 57 school districts. As part of Governor Greg Abbotts 40 Point Plan for school safety, Zemlicka mentioned new construction requirements will be put in place to ensure safe school buildings. Hines said the districts newest school, Suchma Elementary School, is already outfitted with new classroom locks, and the older schools will be retrofitted with them as well. He said the Conroe High School Phase 2 renovation aims to bring the six-building campus under one roof to reduce the number of entries to the high school and keep students safe.

Conroe ISD earns B in the 2018-19 A-F accountability system

The Texas Education Agency released the 2018-19 accountability ratings for school districts across the state Aug. 15. Conroe ISD received a B for its work during the 2018-19 school year with its 62,577 students and 59 campuses. CISD earned 89 out of 100, the same as last year. CISD earned 89 out of 100, one point higher than last year. CISD earned 88 out of 100, one point lower than last year.

Conroe ISD to offer free and reduced-price meals to qualifying students

Conroe ISD will provide free and reduced-price meals to qualifying children in the 2019-20 school year, according to a press release. When school begins Aug. 14, CISD will begin distributing letters to households in the district about applying for free and reduced-price meals. The press release said families may apply online at www.myschoolapps.com or fill out an application at 601 W. Lewis St., Conroe, and give it to Free and Reduced Specialist Dina Herrick. CISD is working to identify the students who qualify due to their status or enrollment and will inform them they do not need to fill out an application, according to the press release. Conroe ISD to propose $660 million bond in November with no tax rate increase

The Conroe ISD board of trustees will propose a $660 million bond in November as the first of a two-part proposition with no tax rate increase. The largest items on Proposition A are Conroe High Schools Master Plan, a new junior high in the Caney Creek feeder zone and general campus renovations. In order to reduce the bond amount, proposed projectssuch as the Teacher Training Center, Jett Center work and the Conroe High School ninth-grade campuswere all removed. Because the bond is a five-year bond, not the districts normal four-year bond, Null said a new elementary campus was added to address growth and pre-K with the additional year. Conroe ISD to host new student registration day

Conroe ISD will hold a pre-K through 12th grade new student registration day Aug. 3, according to a press release. The event will run from 9 a.m. to noon and is intended for students new to the district for the 2019-20 school year. To register, students must have a birth certificate or other proof of identity, a social security card if available and an immunization record. Conroe ISD board of trustees considers Senior Priority Pass Program, STAAR scores

Community members older than 60 will be able to go to Conroe ISD events for free, according to the CISD board of trustees. At its July 16 meeting, the CISD board approved a report from Director of Communications Sarah Blakelock on a Senior Priority Pass Program. Blakelock said the program will go into effect for the 2019-20 school year Aug. 19. Although the trustees discussed the preliminary 2019-20 budget for the majority of the meeting, several other items were debated. Rice said the $20 million to the capital maintenance fund is meant to seed the fund and to purchase two future school sites.

House Bill 3 marks historic school finance, tax reform

House Bill 3 has been described by legislators as one of the most extensive school finance reform bills in the states history. The maintenance and operations portion of a school districts tax rate funds daily operations, and the smaller interest and sinking rate accrues from bonds. Creighton said the percentage of public school districts funding from the statewhich has declined in recent yearsis increasing from 38% to 45%.
