HOUSTON – Authorities are looking into what caused an officer to shoot a man, who they say, “made a sudden move” while they were in the middle of detaining a woman downtown Monday night.

It happened shortly after 9:45 p.m. when Houston police said they were called to Capitol St. near Buffalo Bayou for reports of a suspicious person with a weapon.
Asst. Chief Rodriguez says a security guard asked a woman to leave the premises, but by the time officers arrived, she had taken off. The security guard told police which direction the woman had gone, and they detained her.

That’s when Asst. Chief Rodriguez said an unidentified man walked toward them. Officers told him to stop and show them his hands, but Asst. Chief Rodriguez said the man ignored them and made a “sudden move” toward the officers, so one of them shot him.
It’s unclear how many times police shot the man (or where he was hit) except it was more than once. He was then taken to a hospital in serious condition, as was the unidentified woman, but for an unrelated matter, the Asst. Chief explained.

The officer who fired his weapon has not been identified, but we’re told has been with HPD for a little less than two years. Per protocol, he is being placed on administrative leave while an investigation is conducted.
