HOUSTON – The KPRC 2 Investigators are looking into questionable projects orchestrated by the Houston Housing Authority.
Projects that were meant to help financially struggling families in public housing developments like Cuney Homes in the Third Ward, Houston’s oldest public housing project.
One such project was meant to put 1,615 brand new window mounted air conditioning units into residents homes at three different housing projects.
The budget was set at $2.3 million, but in the end, the project has ended up costing you and I, taxpayers, $5.4 million, more than twice what it was supposed to cost.
KPRC’s Amy Davis began looking into this questionable project months ago and now the Houston Housing Authority’s Board of Commissioners has voted unanimously to bring in an independent investigator to look into the Houston Housing Authority’s practices related to the award of contracts and the approval of payments involving these projects.
The commissioners also have voted unanimously to hire an independent consultant to evaluated the work of the President and CEO of the HHA, David Northern.
Here is a sample of one of the deals, the new investigator will be looking at from KPRC 2 Investigator Amy Davis.
The KPRC 2 Investigates team led by Investigator Amy Davis will continue to break down this investigation in the coming days. Tomorrow, we’ll explore why a contract was awarded to a company based in Chicago to install AC units in Houston.
