In this episode of “Eat Like a Local”, we’re taking a new look at barbecue. In Texas, barbecue means meat smoked low and slow, but as host Chris Shepherd explains internationally barbecue takes on a different interpretation with meat cooked fast over fire or charcoal.
Bundu Kahn
11929 University Blvd #1k | Sugar Land
10941 FM 1960 | Houston
Chris’ friend and owner of Burger Bodega Abbas Dhanani takes Chris to Sugar Land to visit his favorite Pakistani barbecue spot, Bundu Khan. There they sit down with Walee Khan whose family owns the restaurant to learn the ins and out of popular Pakistani barbecue dishes like beef boti and chicken tikka. They watch as their dinner is skewered and cooked over open flames before being presented alongside naan and paratha.
Korea Garden
9501 Long Point Rd Ste Z | Houston
Chris then stops at Korea Garden in Houston for an interactive barbecue experience where guests grill their own meat and vegetable on tabletop grills. Chris explains the process of ordering and cooking the Korean barbecue way.
While the fresh grilled meat is the star of the meal, guests won’t want to miss out on the banchan - side dishes that are customary in Korean meals. Banchan are unique to each restaurant and at Korea Garden, they include everything from kimchi to dried anchovies and gochujang-coated potatoes.
