No matter the time of day or your mood, there’s a sandwich that’s sure to satisfy your cravings. In this episode of “Eat Like a Local”, Chris Shepherd hits the road to find everything from a savory breakfast sandwich to a satisfying Philly cheesesteak. Hoagies, subs, clubs, Cubans, they’re all part of the quest to find the best in town.
Tony’s Italian Deli
24504 Kuykendahl Rd., Suite 100 | Tomball
16283 Highway 105 W. #9 | Montgomery
First up, Chris follows a tip that some of the best Italian subs are north of the city. He heads to Tony’s Italian Delicatessen in Tomball where he discovers the Stallone packed with classic Italian cured meats and the Lucky, a hot and crispy sub with sweet Italian sausage, pepperoni and Genoa salami - perfect for pizza lovers. Of course, Chris can’t leave without trying the deli’s version of his personal favorite, the chicken parm. Tony’s also has a location up near Lake Conroe!

Avalon Diner
2417 Westheimer Rd. | Houston
8823 Katy Freeway | Houston
When it comes to cold sandwiches, the club is always Chris’ pick. He shares that Avalon Diner is one his favorite spots in the city to grab one.
Watch the video to see what he says about other restaurants that don’t use both turkey and ham on their club sandwiches.
Home Slice
3701 Travis St. | Houston
Home Slice Pizza in Midtown is known for its pizza by the slice, but Chris is here for the subs. The Italian and Turkey are his go-to’s, both piled high with meat cheese and the perfect amount of shredduce (yes, that’s a real word).
Philly Flats
24025 Katy Fwy, Suite L. | Katy
Houston’s transplant culture delivers up some of Chris’ favorite bites of the day. At Philly Flats, Pennsylvania-native Scott Boyer and his wife Kim have brought Scott’s hometown favorite the cheesesteak to Katy.
Chris learns the ins and outs of an authentic cheesesteak and all the variations – whiz, provolone, American cheese – the debate is real, but the choice is yours! Scott also introduces Chris to a pizza steak. Never heard of it? Don’t worry, it’s a (delicious) ‘Philly thing’ that Chris just has to try.
La Guadalupana
2109 Dunlavy St. | Houston
In the mood for a breakfast sandwich? La Guadalupana is a great stop -- Chris recommends the breakfast torta and the breakfast croissant, which is like an omelet on a croissant.
Cafe Piquet
5757 Bissonnet St. | Bellaire
Also in this episode, Chris finds a new favorite, a Cuban press that he declares one of the best sandwiches in the city. It’s one of the many dishes worth trying at Cafe Piquet in Bellaire.
