HOUSTON – Alerts:
- Severe thunderstorm watch issued for Austin, Brazos, Burleson, Colorado, Fort Bend, Grimes, Harris, Liberty, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Walker, Waller, and Washington counties until 8 p.m.
We’ve been tracking a stalled cold front across north Texas that is finally going to head towards Houston later on Friday.
The Storm Prediction Center upgraded our severe threat for Friday afternoon into Saturday morning as storms are likely to fire up as we kick off the weekend.
We’ve had multiple days of heat and humidity, but so far, storm chances have been limited because of a “cap” or lid on development across Houston.
But that is about to change ...
Friday Timing:
Storms will likely fire up early into Friday afternoon across our northern counties, which is where most of he storms have stopped because of the “cap” for most of this week:
Our atmosphere is ripe for fast, large storm cells to develop with a ton of lightning, heavy downpours and possibly strong to damaging wind gusts of 50mph+
In addition, storms will not be very fast to move, meaning that heavy rain of an inch or more in a very short amount of time could overwhelm roads, leading to some minor street flooding.
Saturday Morning:
The cold front will move through the area pre-dawn Saturday with storms continuing to pound across the area into sunrise.
