When it comes to planting, it’s all about understanding the freeze. Late April and early May usually mean we’re past Houston’s last frost date, typically mid-March. So, what should you plant in your front yard?

Let the weather guide you! Sunflowers, marigolds, and periwinkle are perfect flowers to plant right now.

Here’s why:

1. Sunflowers

They grow fast in Houston’s heat, and if you plant now, they’ll be in full bloom by summer!

2. Marigolds

These heat-tolerant plants not only boast bright blooms but also help keep pests away from garden vegetables like cucumbers, a popular crop to grow.

3. Periwinkles

Not only are they low maintenance, but they thrive in hot weather. Plant them now to get ahead of Houston’s intense summer heat!

And don’t forget about the soil:

With the spring humidity are clay-heavy soil can hold a lot of water, so you’ll want to mix in compost to help improve drainage. This will help your beautiful sunflowers, marigolds and periwinkles thrive ahead of the hot weather this summer!
