You probably felt it on Monday - southeast Texas was warm! Most of the area hit 80+ degrees. That got Shannon Adams to send me this question:
It might feel rare to hit the 80s in the middle of winter, especially since our average highs this time of year are between 65° and 71°. Believe it or not, it’s not all that unusual. In February 2024, we had four straight days of 80+ degrees on the 24th, 25th, 26th, and 27th. Fun fact: every single day in February has a record high of at least 80°.
Take Monday, for example. Not only did Houston climb above 80°, but we shattered the previous record by hitting 83°! That was the last 80° record left standing for February, and it’s officially gone.
What is rare is soaring to 90°. You may be surprised to hear that we’ve actually hit 90° in February three times! The hottest February day on record was 91°, set on February 20, 1986. We’ve also climbed to 90° on February 22 and 28!
More 80s are on the horizon, and we might even break a few more records. Here are the record highs to watch for Tuesday through Thursday.
Cooler weather is coming, but it’s taking its sweet time. Highs in the 80s are sticking around through Saturday! The records at the end of the week are safe, Friday’s is 86°, and Saturday’s is 87°. A cold front finally arrives Sunday, bringing cooler temperatures for next week
Which do you prefer: warmth and humidity or cold and crisp air?
