HOUSTON – We kicked off 2025 with a very chilly January in SE Texas! Our snow day will be talked about for years to come... but what now? As we look ahead to February the climate prediction center expects us to be slightly warmer and drier than average.
RECAP: Is it just me, or has January felt like an entire year?

February brings love letters, small chocolates, pink sweaters, and often strong cold fronts! Here’s what we typically see this month.
Temperature changes:
Temperatures tend to swing quite a bit in February, but in general, we should increase slightly through the month. Our average high increases to 71° by the end of February. By the end of the month, our average low temperature is still cool in the lower 50s.
One thing that February is notorious for is bringing big freezes. Everybody remembers our terrible freeze in 2021 around Valentine’s Day, but did you know our coldest Valentine’s Day actually occurred in 1899? That year we dropped to an ice cold 10°.
We have reached the 80s every day in February, and our earliest 90° day was when we hit 91° on February 20th, 1986. Remember we are never perfectly average. Last month we were below average (by quite a bit!).
Daylight changes:
One of my favorite things about February is how much daylight we gain! In fact, by this Sunday (February 2nd) we will see our first sunset in the 6 p.m. hour since November 2!
Not only do our sunsets get later, but our sunrises will get noticeably earlier too! By February 16th we will have sunrises back in the 6 a.m. hour. We gain roughly 90 seconds of sunlight a day resulting in an extra 45 minutes by Feb. 28th!
Lunar Calendar for February:
We had a new moon on January 29th, which means we start February with a waxing crescent. As we go through the first two weeks the sky will begin to brighten up. The first quarter moon will fall on February 5th.
The full moon this month falls on February 12. This is called the “snow moon.” It’s called the snow moon because this is the snowiest month for many across America. This full moon is also sometimes called the storm moon or the hunger moon.
Here at KPRC 2, we hope you have a wonderful February! If you are decorating for Valentine’s we’d love to see it! Send in your photos to Click2Pins!
