It’s hard to believe that in just a matter of weeks, we went from snow boots to the possibility of flip-flops this week. But before we explore the warmer temperatures headed our way - I thought we should look at one of my favorite weather tools - the almanac.
While I think we can all agree that January felt cold, the almanac helps us figure out the context and tone. Because I’m always asking myself - is it really cold? or is it just me.
Houston’s snowfall history: Could 2025’s winter weather break records?
Turns out it was cold than average by nearly 6 degrees or 5.7 to be exact. Thanks to an arctic cold front, Houston not only saw much colder temperatures the week of the 21st-25th of January - but also we got snow on January 21st. And while our highs for the month of January we’re nearly 6 below average - it was really our morning lows in January that had us all shivering in our boots! And now we can forget the magical snow day in Houston on January 21 or any of the epic snow people the children across Houston made that day too!
So what can we expect this week? And Why?
We’ll continue to track warmer weather this week thanks to a “heat ridge” bringing us warmer air as winds start to shift south bringing us warmer air from the Gulf of Mexico. And while the temperatures will be in the 80s for the majority of the work week - the moisture from the Gulf - will also make it foggy in the mornings too!
So will next week be hot?
According to the almanac, the answer is yes - next week - we’re looking at temps 10-11 degrees above average and it’s expected to stay above average at least until February 11th.
All this to say - we went from snow boots to wearing flip-flops in just a matter of weeks as the Groundhog is expected to give his annual weather prediction tomorrow! So yes, grab your flip-flops but also note it might be cloudy and foggy as we start the work week.
Your weather team will keep you posted to help plan not only your day but your week too!
