The Atlantic hurricane season came to an end on Nov. 30.

2024 was a destructive season for the United States with five hurricanes making landfall in the country. Those five storms were Beryl, Debbie, Francine, Helene and Milton.
There was a total of 18 named storms with 11 of those becoming hurricanes. Five of those would achieve major hurricane status by reaching Category 3 or higher.
Hurricane Beryl, which made its final landfall on the Texas coast on July 8, became the earliest Category 5 hurricane on record in the Atlantic basin. It would become a Category 5 on July 2, while it was out in the Caribbean Sea, although its interaction with land would mean it would end up only being a Category 1 at its final landfall in Texas.
Preliminarily, Category 4 Hurricane Helene which made landfall in Florida on Sept. 26, is the deadliest hurricane to hit the continental U.S. since Hurricane Katrina in 2005. More than 150 direct fatalities were attributed to Helene, with the majority of those being in North Carolina and South Carolina, which received devastating flooding as a result of the storm.
Hurricane Milton, which made landfall in Florida on Oct. 9, rapidly intensified into a Category 5 in the Gulf of Mexico. Although it would weaken and ultimately make landfall as a Category 3, the rate of intensification was among the most rapid ever observed.
