RICHMOND – Healthcare workers in Fort Bend County are among the first to get vaccinated with the Moderna vaccine. The Oak Bend Medical Center in Richmond received its first shipment of the vaccine on Wednesday. The hospital received 1,000 doses and 50 workers on the frontlines got their first shot. On Wednesday morning, Glenn Lakes Pharmacy in Missouri City received their first shipment of the Moderna vaccine. “This is an exciting moment because this is the hope that we can get past this thing,” Freudenberger said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has released recommendations for those experiencing allergic reactions after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine. If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to any ingredient that is in a COVID-19 vaccine, CDC says you should not get that particular vaccine. The CDC doesn’t recommend anyone getting a second shot if you have a severe allergic reaction after getting the first shot. Vaccination providers must give care as quickly as possible in case of a severe allergic reaction to the vaccine. Once the emergency is under control, a vaccine recipient is advised to be monitored for several hours,The CDC says they have been monitoring reports of severe allergic reactions.

A local expert explained the differences between the Moderna vaccine and the one approved last week from Pfizer. “I would have no qualms with receiving either vaccine,” said Dr. Jennifer Whiatker, an infectious disease specialist with Baylor College of Medicine. But the Moderna vaccine is recommended for patients 18 and older while Pfizer’s vaccine can be administered to patients as young as 16. “It might be a little bit easier to distribute the Moderna vaccine,” Whitaker said. Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease doctor, says if the FDA advisory committee recommends the Moderna vaccine tomorrow afternoon it actually could be approved by the FDA as early as tomorrow evening.
