In recent days, the lives of over a million migrants in the U.S. have been turned upside down with the cancellation of their Temporary Protected Status (TPS).

A major shift in U.S. immigration policy is leaving thousands of Venezuelans uncertain about their future. The Trump administration has revoked the Temporary Protected Status (TPS) extension that previously allowed them to stay and work legally in the U.S., putting approximately 600,000 Venezuelans at risk of losing their legal protections.

The Biden administration is allowing eligible Haitian nationals residing in the U.S. to apply for a new 18-month designation for temporary protected status.

Acting Department of Homeland Security Secretary David Pekoske said Friday that temporary protected status would be extended for 18 months. Temporary status allows foreign citizens to stay in the U.S. if they lack some other form of legal residency and come from a country that meets certain criteria that makes it dangerous to return. Pekoske said Syria continues to meet that criteria because of the civil war. The Trump administration had sought to end TPS for several countries, including Haiti, El Salvador and Nicaragua, but extended it for Syrians.
