Giant tortoises, penguins, sea turtles: How Houstonians are helping save animals in the Galápagos Islands
As families file into the Houston Zoo to experience the new Galápagos Islands habitat, they’re making a difference for conservation efforts around the globe. Funding that comes in from guests allows the Zoo to support projects that are saving wildlife. Members of our KPRC 2 team traveled with the Houston Zoo to the Galápagos Islands ahead of the opening of the new exhibit and witnessed firsthand what’s being done to save giant tortoises, sea turtles, sea lions, marine iguanas, and penguins.
Fly me a river
We’re all used to the hurricane hunters out there flying into, well, hurricanes, to collect wind, temperature, pressure, and moisture data. The airplane shown above is the WC-130J which flies directly into these storms at 24,000-30,000 feet dropping what basically amounts to small computers (dropwindsondes) which sample the atmosphere as they fall to the ocean floor. That information is transmitted back to supercomputers to help create our hurricane forecasts.
Small droplets, Big colors!
Today’s cover photo is a beautiful example of what you might call a ‘rainbow in the clouds.’ In fact, this phenomenon goes by the term “cloud iridescence” or “irisation”, named after the Greek goddess, Iris, goddess of the rainbows! Obviously, showing the same colors, it’s easy to think of these as rainbows although they don’t arch and they don’t form following a rain shower. Here’s another example from Click2pins taken just the other day:

Wednesday's forecast: Warm, humid day
HOUSTON – Wednesday morning started off with a Dense Fog Advisory in effect until 8 a.m. The fog was thickest along Interstate 10 and to the south. After the fog burned off, we're in for another warm and humid day with a high of 85. It'll be a similar story for the rest of the week, but Local 2 Meteorologist Anthony Yanez is watching a cold front that could lead to a slight cool down next week. Have a great day!
More freezing temps expected in Southeast Texas
HOUSTON – Southeast Texas residents woke up Wednesday to freezing temperatures, and it will be even colder Thursday morning. Temperatures dipped to 29 degrees in Houston on Wednesday morning, but they're expected to dip even lower on Thursday. Several Southeast Texas counties were under a hard freeze warning. "There's also a small chance of rain on Sunday if those lows hit us in the right spot," Yanez said. Texas Department of Transportation officials are also getting ready for another night of freezing temperatures.
