How Texans’ Will Anderson Jr. builds ‘legacy’ in Houston, holds driving safety demonstration with HFD, USAA

HOUSTON – Hoisting heavy equipment to saw through a car door while decked out in a full firefighter uniform, Texans defensive end Will Anderson Jr. rolled up his sleeves with the Houston Fire Department.

Using the Jaws of Life to remove a door in a simulation to extricate people from a car, Anderson participated in a program to promote driving safety and spread awareness about best practices if there’s an accident in a partnership with USAA at Fire House Station 55 during a Sacks for Safety event Tuesday morning.

“Bringing awareness to safe driving, my little piece, is be safe, have fun, make sure you’re using both mirrors, seatbelts on,” Anderson said. “It was awesome. Very powerful, I learned a few techniques out th4ere that helped me out a lot.

Anderson met with emergency responders and military personnel from the U.S. Coast Guard. He also used a USAA safe driving simulator.

Anderson is one of the Texans’ most involved players in the community with the Houston Food Bank and other ventures.

“Just being here, being in Houston and showing all the love that they show us and welcoming us with open arms, it just means more to get back into the community and show that we really love the city and we’re here for the community,” Anderson said. “There’s a lot more I want to do, leave my legacy here in Houston, man. So, I’m excited about it.

“I love it, man. I love giving back to the community. I love partnering with USAA and just getting the word out, using my platform to be helpful in any way I can.”

As Anderson emphasized, there’s a need to take care of each other while on the open road.

The former NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year just wants everyone to be safe.

“Yeah, these Houston streets are crazy, man,” he said. “So, I’m glad I got a chance to come out and be a part of this. It’s very important. You have to drive for everybody on the road and make sure you’re looking out for everybody and just practicing safe driving.

“Man, I’m sweating. It was fun. I still got the pants and boots on. I was sweating like the first three minutes in as soon as I put it on. It was a workout. Those tools, those machines they use, they’re really heavy.”
