Man swinging machete shot by officer at Conroe park

CONROE, Texas – A man was taken to a hospital after being shot by an officer in Conroe Monday.

Authorities say it happened around 7 p.m. at MLK Park at 1001 Ave M.

Witnesses told police there was a man walking through the park while swinging a machete.

When an officer arrived, authorities say the man, identified as 32-year-old Zachary Raychel, ignored commands and began walking toward the officer while swinging the machete and saying “shoot me”.

As Raychel approached the officer, the officer fearing for his safety fired one round from his weapon, which struck Raychel.

Raychel was taken to a hospital.

No officers or any other people in the park were hurt in the incident.

“The case is under active investigation by the Conroe Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division, in coordination with the Montgomery County District Attorney’s Office. The officer involved, a four-year department veteran, will not be identified at this time,” the Conroe Police Department said.
