Texans claim rookie linebacker Jackson Woodard off waivers from Seahawks

HOUSTON – The Texans were awarded rookie linebacker Jackson Woodard off waivers from the Seattle Seahawks, per a league source.

Woodard went undrafted and signed with the Seahawks before being waived and claimed by the Texans.

Woodard played at UNLV after beginning his college career at Arkansas.

He was named the Mountain West Conference Defensive Player of the Year.

Woodard recorded 135 tackles last season with 17 tackles for losses, 3 1/2 sacks and 12 pass breakups. He was named a team captain and a bowl game Defensive Most Valuable Player with 11 tackles in the L.A. Bowl.

Woodard (6-foot-2, 234 pounds) has posted a 36-inch vertical leap.

A former walk-on, Woodard earned a scholarship with the Razorbacks before transferring.
