The Houston Astros announced Friday they released struggling First Baseman Jose Abreu from the Major League roster.
Abreu will be owed more than $30 million, after signing a 3-year $58.5 million deal before the 2023 season. The 2020 American League MVP and three-time All-Star struggled in his tenure as an Astro, hitting just .217 with 20 home runs in 176 games.

He didn’t fare much better in his return, and has been released with a batting average of .124 and two home runs in 2024. Abreu’s offensive production yielded an OPS+ of 4, the league average being 100.
