GALVESTON, Texas – A judge has lowered the bond for an 88-year-old man accused of fatally shooting his terminally ill wife at their Galveston home on Monday morning.

Around 4:45 a.m., an emergency medical device went off at a home, located in the 3200 block of Dominique Drive.

When first responders arrived, they found a 89-year-old Anita Leal dead with an apparent gunshot wound.

Police said her husband, Ernest Leal, told paramedics he had shot his wife as she lay in bed.

He was taken to the Galveston Police Department for questioning and then booked into jail, where he was charged with murder.

His bond was initially set at $250,000, but lowered to $80,000.
