HOUSTON – A man was arrested on Thursday and is now facing multiple charges after a video showed him brutally assaulting a 9-month-old puppy, according to constables with Harris County Precinct 1.

Gerald Allen Young II, 23, was charged with two counts of felony cruelty to a non-livestock animal by means of torture, which carry a penalty of two to 10 years in prison as well as fines of up to $10,000.

The incident happened at an apartment complex located in the 2600 block of Gramercy Street in southwest Houston.

Young’s repeated violent abuse the young Shepherd dog, named Timmy, was captured on video as well as seen by multiple witnesses.

In one video, Young punches and kicks the dog, as well as lifts it off the ground by the scruff of the neck and then hurls it with what investigators describe as “extreme force.”

The dog is launched about five feel down the hallway of an apartment complex.

Audio captures the dog yelping. Its collar snaps. Its sprints away.

In another incident, Young is accused of body slamming the dog into concrete. In yet another, he lifts the dog the ground, by its neck, then walks about ten feet while it is suspended in the air.

Officials said the injured puppy was rescued earlier this week and is now under the care of the Houston SPCA’s veterinary team at their on-campus Animal Hospital.

The Houston SPCA veterinarians report that he suffered from three fractured ribs and a pneumothorax. He is currently in stable condition.

“This is a heartbreaking example of senseless cruelty,” said Dr. Roberta Westbrook, senior vice president of veterinary services at Houston SPCA. “There is no doubt that filing a cruelty report saved this young dog’s life.”

A court date has been set for next week, where a judge will determine custody of the dog.

Anyone who witnesses suspected animal abuse or neglect is encouraged to report it immediately by calling 713-869-SPCA (7722) or visiting HoustonSPCA.org , where video or photos can be uploaded.
