4-year-old boy accidentally shot himself in head at SE Houston apartment complex

A 4-year-old boy was rushed to a hospital Monday afternoon after suffering from a gunshot wound to the head at a southeast Houston apartment complex.

The incident happened just before 1 p.m. in the 10700 block of Fuqua Street at the SageHollow Apartments.

Houston police said the child had got a hold of a gun and accidentally shot himself during the incident. It is unclear how the child got ahold of the gun or where it was located within the apartment.

HPD detained the boy’s mother and her fiancé for questioning, but no arrests have been made at this time.

KPRC 2 spoke with a woman who saw first responders rush to the apartments.

“Nobody should have a gun accessible to any child of any age. I hope that they get to the bottom of it. I hope they know exactly what happened,” said Cathy Lazenberry.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office will determine whether any charges are filed.

As of Monday night, the child was scheduled for surgery and is in critical condition.
