Mother, three children pulled from pond in Liberty County

LIBERTY COUNTY, Texas – A mother and her three children were hospitalized after being pulled out of a pond on the family’s property in Liberty County. Investigators with the sheriff’s office say her husband told 911 she had given their children Nyquil before trying to drown them.

The Liberty County Sheriff’s Office got that call just before 6 a.m.

Deputies arrived at the pond, located in the 9100 block of FM 1008, at 6:13 a.m. where they found the three children and dad all near the pond. The mom was still in the water, according to Capt. David Meyers with the sheriff’s office.

Deputies said two of the children, a 6-year-old son and 15-year-old daughter were conscious and alert and taken by ambulance to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Another daughter, age 11, as well as the 39-year-old mother, were found unconscious and life-flighted there in critical condition.

The son and older daughter are stable

Meyers said CPS has been notified about the case. He also noted that there is no confirmation if alcohol was used.

“So right now, we don’t have a specific focus on the mom or the dad,” Meyers said. “We’re looking at both and interviewing the dad, we’re going to interview the kids through forensic interviews through Bridgehaven, and hopefully get some answers as to what the kids tell us, and we can piece the puzzles together.”

FULL PRESS CONFERENCE:

Meyers said the dad was cooperating and was interviewed by Texas Rangers and then taken to a family member’s home. He added it’s been a long time since they’d dealt with anything like this.

“I would describe it as bizarre and breathtaking, seeing everything that we’ve been faced with today and what the deputies and the investigators had to deal with upon arriving to the scene. . .any time kids are involved, it’s always a heart-wrenching emotion that goes through all of us in law enforcement. And the best thing that we can do right now is pray for the kids. And the parents, both of them.”

Investigators are expected to be at the home through the night and into Tuesday, Meyers said.

The Texas Rangers and the Baytown Police Department are assisting in the investigation.
