A man is behind bars after deputies say he opened fire on them during what appears to have been a swatting call early Tuesday morning.

Deputies were dispatched to the 18600 block of Atlantic Drive in Humble. When they arrived, 47-year-old Kenyon Levor Coleman was allegedly waiting for them in a wooded area, armed with an automatic rifle.

According to Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, Coleman fired at deputies as they pulled up. No deputies were injured. Officials believe the rifle jammed, preventing Coleman from clearing the weapon and firing additional rounds.

Deputies say Coleman retreated into the woods but was quickly located and taken into custody. A rifle, a large amount of ammunition, and a chair he had reportedly set up were recovered at the scene.

Coleman was dressed in all black and appeared to have been lying in wait for deputies. Gonzalez described the incident as a potential swatting call, a fake emergency call intended to lure law enforcement to a specific location.

Coleman is charged with aggravated assault of a police officer and has been booked into the Harris County Jail.

“I thank God no deputies were hurt,” Gonzalez said in a post on social media.
