HOUSTONHouston Grand Opera is getting international recognition once again!

The company announced Thursday it has been named a finalist for Opera Company of the Year at the prestigious International Opera Awards 2025, making it the only American opera house in the category.

Houston Grand Opera is one of the largest and most acclaimed opera companies in the U.S. Since its founding, HGO has staged 76 world premieres, launched its own record label in 2025, and earned major awards, including a Tony, two Grammys, and three Emmys.

HGO was also the only U.S. company in history to receive the honor three times, with past nominations in 2017 and 2019. This year’s other nominees include Deutsche Oper Berlin (Germany), GöteborgsOperan (Sweden), MusikTheater an der Wien (Austria), Opernhaus Zürich (Switzerland), and Teatro alla Scala (Italy).

“This is an incredible day for our company and our city,” General Director and CEO Khori Dastoor said in a statement. “Houston dreams big, and HGO shares those dreams with audiences through world-class opera that resonates far beyond our stage.”

Winners will be announced Nov. 13 in Athens, Greece, at a ceremony hosted by the Greek National Opera. The event will also be livestreamed on OperaVision.

“This nomination not only reflects Houston’s place on the global opera map—but it’s also a testament to the extraordinary artists, administrators, board members, and supporters who make this work possible,” Dastoor concluded.
