AUSTIN – The Texas Education Agency says it will investigate teachers and school staff accused of making inappropriate comments on social media following the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.
In a letter sent Friday to superintendents across the state, TEA Commissioner Mike Morath directed districts to gather documentation of posts that could violate the Educator’s Code of Ethics. He said the materials will be reviewed to determine whether disciplinary action is necessary.

The move comes as Republican lawmakers and activists across Texas condemned online commentary mocking Kirk’s killing. Several lawmakers have called for the removal of teachers, professors and public officials who criticized him.
Separately, legislative leaders announced committees will study freedom of speech on college campuses in the wake of Kirk’s death. The panels are expected to review existing laws and examine campus policies related to political expression.
