Herman said two of his deputies were responding to an incident on the Sam Houston Toll Road at Ella when a possible drunk driver crashed into the deputies’ vehicles.
One of the deputies had to be flown to the hospital via Lifeflight, while the second deputy was transported by ambulance.
The toll road was reopened later in the morning after being shut down for hours.
The deputies, a man and a woman, are being treated for leg, hip and head injuries. Constable Herman said the injured Corporal has served with Pct. 4 for more than four years, and the female deputy has served more than two years.
Thursday afternoon, the female deputy was released from the hospital. The man is now out of surgery and in stable condition, but Constable Herman described his situation as “a long road to recovery.”
The suspected drunk driver was identified as Wilfredo Chaves Arzola, 32. He has been arrested and booked into Harris County Jail on charges of intoxication assault with serious bodily injury to a peace officer and reckless aggravated assault with a deadly weapon to a peace officer.
Arzola’s bond and court appearance date have not been set at this time.
