Third senior living facility managed by Asset Living leaves residents stranded due to broken elevators

SUGAR LAND, Texas – Residents at a Sugar Land senior living facility are reporting missed medical appointments and dangerous falls due to broken elevators.

This marks the third Asset Living-managed property facing similar issues in recent months, according to KPRC 2.

At The Gala on Old Richmond Highway, 82-year-old Marian Elder said she has been forced to use stairs since May 14 when the elevator stopped working.

“It [does] something to my knees,” Elder said, describing the daily struggle to leave the building.

For some residents, the situation is even more urgent. Pamela Howard, who needs dialysis three times a week, has had to rely on emergency services for transportation.

“I have dialysis Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday... I called the ambulance and the firemen, and they brought me up here,” Howard explained.

This is not an isolated incident. Similar elevator problems have affected two other Asset Living properties recently:

  • The Jubilee in Missouri City experienced months-long elevator outages before repairs were completed.
  • The Retreat at Barbers Hill has left Richard Purcell, a double amputee, stranded in his upstairs apartment due to non-functioning elevators.

“I want to ask y’all something, how do you think a man can get down the stairway the way I am,” Purcell said, highlighting the severe impact on residents with mobility challenges.

The elevator outages are taking a heavy toll on residents with health conditions. Wilma B., a second-floor resident at The Gala, struggles with the stairs due to multiple health issues.

“I got two bad knees, I got a pinched nerve in my back, and I just have a lot of health problems,” she said.

While management has posted notices saying repair parts have been ordered, no specific timeline for repairs has been provided. KPRC2 News will continue monitoring the situation at all three properties.
