1 dead after crash between car and trailer that closed lanes on I-69 in Sugar Land

A person has died after a fatal crash involving an SUV and a tractor-trailer in Sugar Land.

The wreck shut down most lanes of I-69 in Sugar Land near Sweetwater Boulevard and Highway 6, according to Sugar Land police.

The crash was reported shortly after 8 p.m.

The SUV reportedly hit the tractor-trailer at a high rate of speed. The passenger-side of the car made contact with the trailer.

Police confirmed the passenger in the SUV died at the scene. The driver of the SUV was transported from the area for medical treatment, but their status is not clear at this time.

As of late Monday, only one northbound lane of I-69 remained open, with all others expected to close as investigators worked the crash site. Officials are urging drivers to avoid the area and expect delays.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
