Man charged in shooting death of 13-year-old boy at west Houston apartment

HOUSTON, Texas – A man was arrested and charged in the shooting death of a 13-year-old boy after police say he fired multiple shots into a west Houston apartment on Aug. 10.

Cameron Clark Jackson, 27, has been charged with murder in the death of Za’Wight Johnson, 13.

What happened

Houston police officers responded to reports of a shooting at 12658 Ashford Meadow around 3:15 p.m. Although the motive remains unclear, investigators do not believe the shooting was random, as several shots were fired into a single apartment.

Sgt. Charlie Lamonte said several people were inside the apartment at the time of the shooting, including the boy’s mother. The 13-year-old was in the living room when a bullet pierced the door, striking him in the leg.

Residents of the complex who tried to help the boy were shocked to learn he later died at the hospital.

Further investigation identified the suspect as Jackson. On Thursday, Aug. 14, he was arrested by the HPD Westside Patrol Divisional Gang Unit and charged with murder by the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.

Jackson was then booked into the Harris County Jail without incident.

Anyone with information about this case is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
