According to police, the man had been shot at an apartment complex, and another individual was driving him to the hospital. While en route to the hospital, their vehicle was hit, causing them to crash into a pole.
The man being rushed to the hospital was confirmed dead after the crash.
Police say it is unclear at this time whether the man died due to the gunshot wound or the crash.
In an update, a detective at the scene said they learned the man was shot after an argument in the 2200 block of N. Sam Houston Parkway. Authorities say they are speaking with another person who was involved in the shooting.
Police say the other person who was in the car transporting the gunshot victim was also taken to a hospital and went through surgery after the crash. He is expected to be ok.
Corey Heathmon is one of dozens of family and friends who rushed to the crash scene near JFK and Beltway 8. It’s where Davis’ body was found inside a black Cadillac.
“Just a fun, loving guy, you know, very outgoing, very smart, he’s ex-military, he was in the Navy,” said Heathmon.
Heathmon works with Davis for the City of Houston Public Works. He said they are more like brothers.
“He would ride with me every day, drop him off at home, make sure he all right. But today, he went home with someone else,” said Heathmon.
Houston Public Works officials said Davis was on his lunch break at the time of the incident. HPD said someone shot Davis during an argument at an apartment complex off the Sam Houston Parkway. It is unclear what the argument was about. Davis’ friend tried driving him to the hospital, but crashed into a car along the way. Police are trying to figure out how the crash happened.
HPD said no arrests have been made at this time, but they do have someone they are questioning. Detectives add, they do not have any outstanding suspects.
Despite the heartache, Heathmon said he has forgiveness for whoever is responsible for Davis’ death.
“It’s up to you to give forgiveness for yourself. But, you know, this is something that we have to deal with. We can’t bring him back. It’s in God’s hands right now,” said Heathmon.
Statement from Houston Public Works Director Randy Macchi:
“Houston Public Works mourns the tragic loss of one of our employees. DeQuavius Davis was killed while on his lunch break Thursday afternoon.
Mr. Davis was a dedicated member of the City of Houston’s drainage and maintenance team and has served the City since 2020.
Our thoughts are with his family, friends and colleagues during this difficult time.”
On Friday, HPD said a male juvenile involved in the shooting turned himself in. After consulting with the Harris County District Attorney’s Office, police say it has been determined the case will be referred to a grand jury for review
Loved ones said Davis leaves behind a 5-year-old son. Those with any information about the investigation are asked to contact Houston Police or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-8477.
