Capoeira Luanda HTX is introducing the city to capoeira, an Afro-Brazilian martial art form that combines self-defense, dance, music, and culture into something that feels more like a celebration than a workout.

Capoeira was created by enslaved Africans in Brazil as a form of resistance and freedom. It’s a powerful, expressive, and deeply rooted in history, and it’s being taught and shared right here in the Greater Houston area.

Led by Professora Venenosa (Karima Wilson) and Instrutores Paraná (Tony Parana) and Bombril (Damon Bowens), Capoeira Luanda offers weekly classes, live performances, and interactive workshops. All ages and skill levels are welcome, and the vibe is more about building community than competition.

On Oct. 26, they’re hosting their second annual batizado, called Vem Jogar Mais Eu, at the Judson Robinson Jr. Community Center. It’s a free, family-friendly event with live music, a capoeira workshop, and a chance to see the art form in action.
