HOUSTON – The Houston Independent School District held a special announcement to release the state’s preliminary STAAR test results.
HISD Superintendent Mike Miles announced the scores for reading, math, science, and social studies for 3rd grade and 8th grade on Thursday afternoon.
Before the Texas Education Agency’s takeover of HISD and intervention two years ago, Miles said the district was behind state average.
Since the takeover, HISD has improved in every exam and has gained academic proficiency in reading, math, and social studies.
For 5th graders, math scores went up by seven points compared to the 2024 test scores. Miles said HISD beat the state’s average in math for grades 3 through 7.
He emphasized that scores matter and HISD students are now reading and doing math at grade level, which translates to better academic performance for all students across the board.
