TIMELINE: Details of string of carjackings that led to death of innocent driver in southwest Houston

HOUSTON – KPRC 2 has obtained court documents that lay out the timeline of events that led to the death of one innocent driver who was carjacked in southwest Houston on May 29.

Authorities have arrested the carjacking suspect, 20-year-old Alexis Garcia, who reportedly went on a string of crime sprees before being captured in Corpus Christi, according to court records.

Although he is suspected of committing the carjacking, Garcia has not been charged in connection with the shooting at this time.

Here’s timeline of what happened from start to finish, according to court records:

Dodge Charger stolen - May 29

A woman reported that she left work in her Dodge Charger and went to her aunt’s home to pick up her child. She said the vehicle was on but the doors were locked. While inside the garage, she heard a loud bang and told her aunt that she was going to check on the vehicle. She said that as she walked out, she saw her vehicle, the gray Dodge Charger, driving away.

She asked her aunt to check the cameras but did not see anything, so she went to nearby neighbors who had cameras and asked to them to check.

In the surveillance video, she saw the suspect.

Hit-and-run crash in stolen vehicle - May 29

The owner of a Toyota Prius says he was traveling east on W. Bellfort Avenue. As he entered the intersection, he said the Charger ran the red light and struck the front end of the Prius, disabling both vehicles in the roadway. The driver got out his vehicle and went to check on the driver of the Charger and saw his right arm was bleeding.

He said he asked the driver if he had insurance and the suspect said he did and then turned and walked south away from the accident.

That’s when the witness asked someone to call 911.

Officers respond to vehicle accident - May 29

HPD Westside Patrol responded to multiple calls at 8:24 p.m. at a vehicle accident in the 11700 block of Southwest Freeway. When officers arrived, they saw two vehicles, a gray Dodge Charger and black Toyota Prius, with major damage in the roadway.

At the scene, the driver of the Prius told them that the driver of the Dodge walked away from the crash towards Wilcrest. While investigating the scene, another man walked up to officers and informed them that his vehicle was stolen by an armed man.

911 call of shooting of deadly carjacking - May 29

From the crash scene, a 911 call was made, reporting that a man was shot in a red sedan that also wrecked at the corner of Wilcrest and South Freeway.

The man in the red sedan was taken to a hospital where he died.

A witness, the driver of an Audi, said he was stopped at the intersection of Wilcrest and Southwest Freeway waiting on the light when he saw the suspect walking.

He said he thought nothing of it and looked at his phone but heard a gunshot and then saw a red sedan speed off from the left lane. He then saw the suspect pointing a black handgun at him.

He then raised his hands and opened his door. He said he stepped back and fell on the ground and the suspect walked up to him and pointed the gun at him, thrusting the gun in his face at least three time before turning and getting into the driver’s seat of his Audi.

Tracking the stolen Audi - May 29, at 9:30 p.m.

Once investigators learned the Audi had a tracking system on it, they tracked the vehicle after the carjacking and it was last pinged on the Southwest Freeway, traveling to Corpus Christi.

At 9:30 p.m., the vehicle was pinged in the 5501 block of Country Road 43 in Corpus Christi.

Corpus Christi officers started looking for the vehicle and found the Audi stuck in a muddy area near 2444 County Road 43.

Patrol officers searched the area and found Garcia in the field with a 45-caliber handgun.

Garcia was wearing the clothing and hairstyle matching the description of the person police believe committed the aggravated assault and theft of the Audi.
