HOUSTON – A multi-vehicle crash early Thursday morning has claimed at least one person’s life and shut down all of the northbound lanes on I-45 for hours.

It happened a little before 3:15 a.m., so details are limited because of how active the scene is. Houston police said there were initial reports of five vehicles involved in the crash, with debris across all lanes on I-45, with one person dead at the scene.
Preliminary information from investigators is that a driver was speeding, going about 105 mph, before it flipped and threw the driver out of the vehicle.

Officials also said that it caused a chain reaction of crashes, with vehicles trying to avoid the overturned vehicle on the freeway. One woman was hospitalized with minor injuries from the secondary crash.
No word has been given yet on other individuals involved and their condition.

HPD’s Vehicular Crimes Division shut down all the northbound lanes, diverting traffic off at North Main Street while they investigated the incident.
The roadway reopened just before 7:45 a.m.
