What is black mold?

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Stachybotrys chartarum, also known as black mold, can appear dark green, gray, or brown. It grows in materials with a high cellulose content, such as fiberboard, gypsum board, and paper. Growth occurs when there is moisture from water damage, leaks, condensation, water infiltration, or flooding. Constant moisture is required for its growth.

Black mold can cause respiratory issues, infections, asthma, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, allergic rhinitis or hay fever, and eczema.

If you suspect you have black mold, here are some signs and symptoms to look out for, according to the CDC:

People with asthma may experience:

  • Coughing
  • Wheezing
  • Chest tightness
  • Shortness of breath

Symptoms of hypersensitivity pneumonitis include:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Cough
  • Muscle aches
  • Chills
  • Fever
  • Night sweats
  • Extreme fatigue
  • Weight loss

You can also visit an allergist to get tested for a black mold allergy, either through skin testing or a blood test.

How to spot black mold in your home

Black mold tends to grow in damp areas, areas prone to moisture, or areas with leaks. It also carries a musty, earthy, or strong odor, so if your home starts to reek of a pungent smell, it may indicate mold.

I found black mold, now what?

If you find black mold, know that it is difficult to eliminate.

If you’re renting, immediately contact your landlord or management, detailing what you have found. Document everything for your records, take photos, check your leasing terms, and consider relocating if you’re experiencing health problems. If you or a family member is experiencing health issues, consult with your doctors.

If you own the home, it’s best to find the cause of the mold, such as a leak, and get it fixed immediately. It’s advisable to contact a professional who specializes in mold removal to ensure all particles have been safely removed.
