Gang member arrested in Stafford after 40 victims targeted in mail theft ring

STAFFORD, Texas – A documented gang member in Sugar Land has been arrested following an investigation into a large mail theft ring, according to the United States Postal Inspection Service.

Fugitives Robert Trujillo and Jason Lopez, were arrested by Houston police on May 7 in Stafford, Texas. The mail theft ring involved multiple suspects who were stealing mail to commit various financial crimes. Court documents identify Trujillo as a documented gang member.

The Houston Police Department, the Sugar Land Police Department, and postal inspectors tracked Lopez and Trujillo to a Stafford hotel. The duo was wanted for multiple mail theft incidents in Harris and Fort Bend counties.

During their arrest, approximately 400 pieces of stolen mail, 40 credit and debit cards, fake and real IDs, stolen checks, and victims’ documents containing personally identifiable information were found. Additionally, a U.S. Postal Service lock, counterfeit postal keys, and materials used to manufacture counterfeit postal keys were recovered.

According to the indictment, at least 40 victims targeted in the mail theft ring were named.

Lopez was arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail on an open Harris County warrant for mail theft. He was charged with fraudulent use and possession of identifying information, as well as possession of a controlled substance.

Trujillo was also arrested and booked into the Harris County Jail, charged with fraudulent use and possession of identifying information and being a felon in possession of a firearm. At the time of his arrest, Trujillo was out on bond for mail theft related to a January 2025 incident in Sugar Land.

This investigation is ongoing, and additional charges are forthcoming.

Jackson, Houston Division.
